Blow for Tottenham as Championship talent pens new deal; N17 connection to count for nothing?

Tottenham target Harry Gray agrees terms of first professional contract with Leeds United after turning 17 earlier this week
Tottenham Hotspur have focused on investing in young talents with high potential in recent years. Credit to former chairman Daniel Levy for adopting this transfer strategy, and new boss Thomas Frank is enjoying the rich benefits following the rise of Lucas Bergvall.
Bergvall is one of the young talents shining under Thomas Frank’s tutelage. The Swedish prodigy’s performances this season have made him indispensable for Spurs. The long-term vision and planning are starting to take shape, and given Thomas Frank’s track record of developing players at his former club Brentford, several youngsters will only benefit in the years to come.
Another talent who arrived in N17 in 2024 was Archie Gray. Tottenham beat Brentford to the £40million signing of Archie Gray from Leeds United, and the teenager was thrown into the deep end by Ange Postecoglou amidst an injury crisis last season. He operated as a makeshift option across the backline, as well as played a few games in his preferred midfield position, helping the Lilywhites negotiate a tricky period.
Blow for Tottenham as Harry Gray agrees first professional contract at Leeds United
In a fresh revelation, Tottenham also tried to sign Harry Gray, along with Archie, from Leeds United in the summer of 2024. However, the Whites were reluctant to lose the younger Gray.
One of the best young prospects in England, Harry Gray turned 17 earlier this week and has now decided to commit his future at Leeds United. According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, the young striker will sign his first professional contract with his boyhood club later this week.
Several top clubs such as Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have tried to poach him away Elland Road, whilst Bundesliga duo Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig were also amongst those keen on his services. However, Leeds have managed to keep hold of the sublime talent and want to make him a key part of their plans going forward.
“Leeds have big plans for Harry Gray,” Graeme Bailey exclusively told TBR Football.
“They were never too worried he would be tempted away, but such is his talent, they knew he would attract interest; that is natural.
“But he is set to stay, and that is great news for everyone at the club.”
Tottenham must continue monitoring the Leeds prodigy’s progress
Tottenham were interested in signing Harry Gray along with Archie, and it is not surprising why. The teenage striker has scored plenty of goals for the Leeds Under-18s and 21s in recent years and also got a taste of competitive football in the Championship last season. Although Daniel Farke is yet to hand him his Premier League debut, we expect the Englishman to get that opportunity later in the season as well.
Harry agreeing his first professional contract with the Whites should delight the Elland Road faithful. While it is a blow in the short term for Spurs, it gives the Hotspur Way chiefs now more of a push to continue monitoring his progress in west Yorkshire.
