Pros and cons of 2% cash-back credit cards
It’s hard to go wrong with a flat-rate cash-back credit card that earns 2% back or better. Many of these cards have no annual fee, so the rewards you earn are profit from day one. However, for all the advantages of cash back, other types of credit card rewards can be more valuable, such as flexible travel rewards. If you want premium protections and perks (like airport lounge access), you’ll want a good travel credit card or a premium rewards credit card.
Pros 2% cash-back credit cards provide a high rate of return on purchases that fall outside of the bonus categories other cards offer
Most 2% cash-back cards have no annual fee
Cons Travel rewards can be more valuable than cash back, so a good travel card can be more lucrative even if it has a lower rate of return
2% cash-back cards typically don’t offer premium benefits and perks
FAQs Do any credit cards offer more than 2% cash back? There are credit cards that have cash-back rates of over 2%, but they come with caveats. Higher rates of return typically are either capped, apply only to specific purchases or both. In other cases, you can earn a better cash-back rate on your credit card when you have large balances in your bank or investment account with the issuer. Is a 2% cash back card worth it? Credit cards that earn 2% cash back are some of the most straightforward and rewarding options. You don’t have to think about limited bonus categories and you’ll still earn an above-average return on every purchase. Does Capital One have a 2% cash back credit card? Capital One has a 2% cash back business credit card (the Capital One Spark 2% Cash Plus), but the best flat-rate cash-back personal card (the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card) only earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

Our methodology
To determine which 2%-cash-back credit cards will put the most money back in your pocket, CNBC Select evaluated over cash-back credit cards issued through FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions that are widely available in the U.S. We compared each card on a range of features, including cash-back rewards, annual fees, welcome bonuses, introductory and standard APR and balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks (e.g., ongoing travel or merchant statement credits), cardholder protections (e.g., purchase protection, $0 liability protection and travel insurance), the application process when available (e.g., is there a credit pull or required credit score) and how easy it is to redeem your rewards (e.g., is there a minimum redemption requirement). We considered consumer spending data forecasts from location intelligence firm Esri to determine where U.S. consumers are spending the most money, like on dining and travel. We used this to help determine what bonus categories are most useful for consumers. We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools.
