DOJ recovers nearly $5 million stolen from a Dorchester union

The Department of Justice has recovered more than $5 million stolen from a labor union based in Dorchester that was scammed by a spoof email scheme that funneled the money to bank accounts in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Nigeria, officials said Wednesday.
In January 2023, the union was defrauded out of $6.4 million after it received a phony email that appeared to be from its investment manager, DOJ officials said in a statement.
“The email misled the workers union into transferring the funds to the wrong bank account, which was controlled by a third party,” the statement said.
