HSHS announces $270 million investment in Green Bay hospitals

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) is making a $270 million investment in two hospitals in Green Bay, the president/CEO of the Wisconsin market announced Thursday.
Bob Erickson said the strategic capital would be “transformational” for HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center on the west side and HSHS St. Vincent Hospital on the east side.
Erickson said it was the largest investment in its history.

St. Mary’s will get a new patient tower for intensive and intermediate care, an “abundance” of natural light — which an HSHS official says promotes healing — wider corridors, a more spacious entrance, and additional parking among other upgrades.
“We are taking a very mindful approach to the design plans to ensure we are creating a more spacious environment that promotes health and healing to the highest level and enhances the overall experience for all who come through our doors,” said Chief Operating Officer John Wagner.
The renovations are still in the conceptual stage but construction will start this summer and is expected to be completed in three years. HSHS said it would use local contractors as much as possible, including its general contractor from Fond du Lac.
Plans are still in development for St. Vincent Hospital, which hosts level 2 trauma care and a Children’s hospital.
The upgrades are to meet the needs of a growing market. HSHS officials cited the Wisconsin Department of Administration saying Brown County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state, with the population growing by 12% over the 25 years.
“This investment is Hospital Sisters Health System’s response to a need for greater access to health care in Green Bay. With projected population growth, an aging population and a growing number of patients traveling to Green Bay from afar to seek health care, we see a significant need to open more access to patients who want to receive care from us,” Erickson said.
“There are tremendous benefits to our community in where St. Mary’s is located,” Wagner added. “Not only does St. Mary’s provide Green Bay’s west side community greater access to care, but its location off I-41 makes it ideal for easy health care access – for those traveling from as far north as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to as far south as Fond du Lac, in need of specialty care.”
Health system officials also noted its partner, Prevea Health, completed a large investment on its Shawano Ave. medical campus blocks away from St. Mary’s.
HSHS operates St. Vincent and St. Mary’s in Green Bay, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan and HSHS St. Clare Memorial in Oconto Falls.
