I-Team: Insurance for stadium not routine with talk of Browns move

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The FOX 8 I-Team found Cleveland City Council is beginning to take a new look at insurance for Huntington Bank Field. It comes with more questions as the Cleveland Browns are planning to move to a dome.
The process of renewing or buying new insurance for the stadium on the lakefront was to begin before council on Monday.
Insurance for the stadium comes up every year. But this year, there’s a different backdrop.
The city owns the stadium, the home of the Browns, so the city needs to keep up the insurance.
But the Browns plan to leave when their lease is up after the 2028 season. The team plans to build a dome in Brook Park.
That has led to a legal fight.
Councilman Brian Kazy said even something like insurance for the stadium needs a closer look.
“I’m sure we’ll have to dig deeper on it, just like your own home or your own auto. You gotta make sure it’s properly insured in case, God forbid, something happens,” he told the I-Team.
We checked on the cost of insurance for the stadium, and we’re waiting for that dollar figure.
This will now go through a couple of council committees before eventually going before the full council.
