WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A California man is facing charges after he allegedly used stolen credit card information on tap-to-pay platforms to buy gift cards at stores across Wayne County, officials said.
Jian Wei Li, 40, of Hayward, California, has been charged with three counts of identity theft, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials said between May 21 and Nov. 11 of this year, Li allegedly “used mobile tap-to-pay platforms with stolen credit card information” to buy gift cards from multiple Wayne County retailers.
An investigation by Northville police led to Li’s arrest on Tuesday, Nov. 18, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Li was arraigned on Thursday, Nov. 20, and he was given a $100,000 cash bond.
If he posts bond and is released, he must wear a GPS tether.
His probable cause conference is scheduled for Dec. 1. A probable cause conference is a procedural hearing where the prosecution and defense can discuss the case and set future dates.
