Spire Motorsports is eager to change the narrative. The team, co-owned by Jeff Dickerson and T.J. Puchyr have taken all the necessary steps to become a championship contender. They purchased a charter from Live Fast Motorsports for a staggering sum of $40 million along with Kyle Busch Motorsports and its sprawling 77,000-square-foot race shop for $14.5 million. The racing side has undergone a significant transformation over the years and are hoping to go from perennial underachievers to a tier-one organization in the Cup Series.
It seems like their time has finally come. According to a popular NASCAR insider, Spire Motorsports are expected to challenge for the Bill France Cup later this year after making plenty of changes to the team’s set up over the year.

Spire Motorsports is leaving no stone unturned. The team has spent significant financial resources to become a title contender, investing in infrastructure, backroom staff and drivers to gain a foothold in the NASCAR Cup Series. In addition to signing championship-winning crew chief Rodney Childers, the racing team have also onboarded Michael McDowell and Justin Haley, as well as Director of Vehicle Performance Matt McCall for the 2025 campaign. The team have employed a long-term outlook to attain their objectives, taking one positive step at a time to eventually become title contenders.
According to NASCAR YouTuber Eric Estepp, Spire Motorsports are expected to make their long-awaited title challenge this year. He said, “I believe at least one Spire Motorsports Chevy will qualify this season. I know I predicted Michael McDowell in my video a couple of weeks ago, but you could make an argument for each of the drivers.” Bullish about his prediction, Estepp went on to say that Justin Haley and Carson Hocevar also stand a chance of making it to the postseason. The content creator went on to say “Folks have said, Spire is now a ‘Mini Hendrick’. We’ll see about that. I think making the playoffs is an extremely attainable goal in 2025.”
It’s not hard to see why Eric Estepp is optimistic about their chances. Michael McDowell, who was at Front Row Motorsports last year saw plenty of success at superspeedways after winning five pole awards and leading a total of 167 laps. Despite switching from the No. 34 Ford to Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 Chevy, the Arizona native still has the same crew chief in Travis Peterson along with most of the same staff. With stability on his side and better equipment at his disposal, getting a win and making it to the playoffs is a realistic possibility.

The same can be said about Carson Hocevar, who was in the top-ten at the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray before hitting the tire barrier. The 22-year-old certainly has the potential to compete against NASCAR’s heavyweights, but will need to further refine his craft in the season ahead. Justin Haley’s crew chief Rodney Childers has won the championship with Kevin Harvick, and the veteran knows what it takes to compete for silverware. With Spire Motorsports transitioning into a tier-1 Chevrolet organization, they could evolve into a “mini Hendrick” sooner rather than later and give their rivals a run for their money.

Spire Motorsports is focused on performance in 2025
The expectations have changed so quickly. When Spire Motorsports was formed in 2018, the team was seen as an underdog which was struggling to find its place in the stock car racing world. Fast forward a few years later and co-owners Jeff Dickerson and T.J. Puchyr have expanded the team’s presence in the Cup and Truck Series, taking them from a mid-tier organization to one which can hope to compete against NASCAR’s elite.
Revealing what has changed in the team over the years, competition director Ryan Sparks said, “I just think the level of accountability we hold each other to. At the end of the day, it’s just performance, right? If we’re not performing, or if it’s an individual or a team or whatever, then we have to assess it now, whereas before, we may have had to kind of deal with it till the end of the season. Now, we have the opportunity where our main focus is pushing performance, and if it doesn’t involve that, then we’re not interested in it.”

Spire Motorsports have plenty of experience going into the season. Rodney Childers has been involved in the Cup Series for two decades, while Travis Peterson has worked with teams such as Hendrick Motorsports and JR Motorsports. The team has attracted some of the most sought after talent in the NASCAR world as well, with Dax Gerringer joining in as technical director from RFK Racing to give them a competitive edge. Considering the investment that has gone into building the team from the ground up, it feels like there’s only a matter of time before it translates into success on the racetrack.
