Police have arrested a man accused of acting as a Good Samaritan so he could steal an unconscious crash victim’s credit cards and other belongings.
Daniel Santos, 49, of Mahwah, was taken into custody last week on charges of receiving stolen property, use of a stolen credit card and multiple drug offenses including second-degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, the Mahwah Police Department said in a statement Friday.
It all started the morning of August 26 when a driver suffered a medical episode and crashed through the window of a business in the nearby village of Suffern, New York. When police arrived, Santos was inside the car with the unconscious driver and appeared to be offering help, officials said.
The victim’s family soon started receiving alerts that his credit cards were being used for suspected fraudulent transaction in Suffern and Mahwah, authorities said. Officers later reviewed surveillance footage of the person using the card and determined that it was Santos, police said.
In the footage, the subject also appeared to be wearing a watch, which authorities said belongs to the victim and is worth about $3,000.
Last Thursday, Mahwah Police arrested Santos during a traffic stop and executed a search warrant on his home. As a result of the search, another resident, 34-year-old Natalie Sarkissia, was also charged with drug offenses including second-degree possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Santos and Sarkissia are both in custody at Bergen County Jail pending detention hearings.
