Manchester United legends have been approached about potentially investing in the club amid rumoured takeover interest from the Middle East, according to talkSPORT.
Fresh speculation over a potential takeover of the Old Trafford side emerged on Thursday after Saudi sports chief Turki Alalshikh shared a cryptic message on social media, hinting that the club could be sold to a new investor.
Writing on X, he claimed that the club is in an ‘advanced stage’ of finalising a sale but later clarified that any potential interest in Man United does not come from him or any other Saudi investor.
TalkSPORT suggests that while club sources ‘are in the dark’ over the claims, the group Alalshikh referenced is believed to be UAE-based, with several United legends also approached about a possible investment.
Glazers’ Man Utd Valuation Revealed
According to talkSPORT, the Glazer family, who are Man United’s majority owners, still value the club in excess of £5billion, partly because of their plans for a new stadium.
They also believe United will continue to grow in value regardless of on-field success, with the Red Devils absent from European competitions for the first time since 2014/15 this season.
Glazers sold a 27.7% stake to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group last year for £1.25bn. The British billionaire raised his ownership share to 28.94% by injecting a further £79.3m last December.
The deal also included a ‘drag-on’ clause, which came into effect in August, requiring Ratcliffe to either sell his shares or match any offer the Glazers accept from interested parties.
INEOS took control of United’s footballing operations after the deal was completed and introduced a number of changes, including wide-ranging cost-cutting measures that resulted in about 450 job losses.
On the footballing side, United have seen disappointing results, finishing 15th in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim last season and losing in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils have started the season with three wins in seven league games and exited the EFL Cup in the second round following defeat to Grimsby Town on penalties.
Amorim has yet to win back-to-back league games since his appointment in November last year, picking up just 37 points from 34 Premier League matches.
